Almost every food on a “can my cat eat this” list ends with “in moderation.” This one does not. Grapes and raisins are a flat no for cats, because they can cause sudden kidney failure, and there is no dose known to be safe. What makes this piece worth your time is not the warning, which you may have heard, but the answer to a question veterinarians could not answer for decades: why. For years, “we don’t know what in a grape does this” was the honest, unsatisfying truth. That has finally changed, and the explanation reframes how seriously to take even a single grape.
The rule, stated plainly
Do not feed your cat grapes, raisins, currants, or sultanas. All of them belong to the genus Vitis, and all of them carry the same risk. Cats are more selective eaters than dogs, so documented poisonings are less common in cats than dogs, but “less common” is not “safe.” It likely reflects that cats are pickier, not that their kidneys are more forgiving. Keep every form of grape well out of reach, including the dried ones hiding in trail mix, cereal, and baked goods.
What poisoning looks like
If a cat eats grapes or raisins, early signs can include vomiting, diarrhea, belly pain, loss of appetite, and lethargy, often within hours. As kidney injury sets in, you may see a cat drinking and urinating far more than usual, and in later, dangerous stages, producing little or no urine at all.
This is an emergency, and time matters. If you see your cat eat grapes, or find the shredded evidence that they got into some, call your vet and a pet poison control hotline immediately. Depending on how much and how long ago, treatment may include inducing vomiting, serial bloodwork to track kidney values, and hospitalization with IV fluids to protect the kidneys. The earlier that starts, the better the odds.
“With grapes I don’t do wait-and-see, and I tell owners not to either,” says Dr. Amara Solis. “By the time a cat looks sick, the kidneys may already be taking damage. The whole game is acting fast, before symptoms, while we can still flush it and support them. A phone call in the first hour is worth more than anything I can do on day three.”
The mystery, and how it got solved
Here is the genuinely new part. For decades, vets knew grapes were toxic but could not identify the culprit. They ruled out pesticides, molds, and heavy metals. The toxin stayed hidden, which is exactly why the guidance was always “avoid entirely”, there was no safe threshold to calculate because no one knew what they were measuring.
Recent research changed that. A 2022 case series in the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care proposed tartaric acid and its salts as the cause. The clue came from an unexpected direction: dogs poisoned by cream of tartar and by tamarind, both rich in tartaric acid, developed the exact same pattern of kidney injury as dogs that had eaten grapes. Grapes happen to contain high levels of tartaric acid. Follow-up work in 2023 showed tartaric acid damaging canine kidney cells directly.
The mechanism makes sense of the danger. Dogs, and by extension cats, appear to lack the organic-acid transporters that other species use to clear compounds like tartaric acid. Without an efficient way to excrete it, the acid accumulates in the kidney’s tubular cells and injures them. It also explains the maddening variability vets always saw: tartaric acid content differs between grape varieties and ripeness, and individual sensitivity differs too, which is why one grape can be catastrophic for one animal and shrugged off by another. That unpredictability is the whole argument for zero tolerance.
What newer research adds
The tartaric-acid finding is still being refined, and it’s worth being precise about what is and isn’t settled. As of the most recent reviews, tartaric acid is the leading and best-supported explanation, confirmed to injure kidney cells in the lab, but the exact toxic dose remains unknown because acid content and individual sensitivity both vary so widely. Regulators and veterinary toxicology resources have not published a “safe” amount, and they are unlikely to, precisely because the dose is a moving target.
There is a practical wrinkle this research supports. Heavily processed grape products, like some jams and juices, are often “detartrated,” meaning much of the tartaric acid is removed, which may lower their risk. That is an explanation, not a green light. The content varies unpredictably from product to product, so the safe move is still to treat anything grape-derived as off-limits and skip the guessing.
The bottom line
Grapes and raisins are one of the few foods with a genuinely simple answer for cats: never. What’s new is that we finally understand the villain, tartaric acid a cat’s kidneys can’t clear, and that understanding argues for more caution, not less, because it explains why even a small, “harmless-looking” amount can do real damage. Keep grapes, raisins, currants, and sultanas out of reach, and if your cat gets into them, make the emergency call first and ask questions later.
