Here is the number from Purdue’s bladder cancer study that almost nobody quoted. Not the six-fold risk. This one: the Scottish Terriers in the study who never developed cancer, in homes their people described as ordinary, still carried the chemical equivalent of more than a year of one-pack-a-day smoking in their urine.
That is the background level. That is what “not really a smoking household” looked like in the lab.
Which reframes the whole thing. The story is not that smoking is bad for dogs, a fact nobody was in suspense about. The story is that the dose your dog absorbs is larger than the dose you think you are handing them, it arrives through routes you do not think of as smoking, and for the first time there is a cheap urine test that turns that risk into something you can actually watch instead of dread.
What the study did
Veterinary oncologist Deborah Knapp and her team at Purdue University followed 120 Scottish Terriers for three years. Rather than trust owner reports alone, they ran two tracks: surveys of the households, covering food intake, activity, and location as well as tobacco use, cross-checked against urine analysis of the dogs themselves, looking for cotinine, the metabolite the body makes from nicotine. Cotinine does not lie about what a dog has been breathing.
Over the three years, 32 of the dogs developed bladder cancer. Seven of them lived with regular smokers. Run the risk math and a dog in a smoking household carried six times the risk of the disease compared with a dog in a smoke-free home. Their urine told the same story from the other direction: on average, those dogs carried exposure equivalent to ten years of a pack a day.
The study was published in The Veterinary Journal in 2024.
Your dog is not standing where you are standing
The six-fold figure is the headline. The part that should change behavior is the exposure level in the supposedly clean homes.
A dog does not experience a room the way you do. Smoke particulate is heavy, and it drifts down and settles: into rug fibers, sofa cushions, dog beds, the bottom two feet of the air. That happens to be exactly where a dog lives. Then the dog grooms itself, licking whatever settled into its coat, so an exposure that is respiratory for you becomes both respiratory and oral for them. Nicotine and its byproducts are cleared through the kidneys, which means the bladder is the organ that ends up marinating in them.
And residue travels. It rides home on a sweater from a friend’s backyard, on hair, on the hands you use to rub a dog’s ears. It follows a car pool, a bar, a smoking coworker.
“Smoke does not stay where it was lit. It settles into fabric, carpet, and hair, and a dog spends its entire day pressed up against those surfaces,” says Dr. Ravi Mehta. “Stepping onto the porch to light one is genuinely better than lighting it on the couch. It is just not the clean break most people believe it is.”
Why Scotties, and why it still means something for your mutt
The obvious objection is that this is one breed, and a breed with an unusual amount of baggage. Scottish Terriers carry up to 20 times the bladder cancer risk of the average dog. The Scottish Terrier Club of America helped fund the work.
That is a fair thing to notice and a bad reason to dismiss the finding. The breed was chosen precisely because its genetic risk is so loaded. When a population is already primed for a disease, an environmental trigger shows up clearly in a manageable number of animals. Knapp’s team has been explicit that testing this in mixed-breed dogs would take hundreds upon hundreds of animals to surface the same signal, not because the signal is absent, but because it is buried in noise.
The genetics decide how flammable the dog is. The environment decides whether anyone strikes a match.
The vape swap is not the escape hatch
The tidy conclusion here is: switch to a vape, no combustion, no secondhand smoke, dog is fine. It is half right and it opens a different hole.
Removing the burning tobacco does remove the airborne particulate. What it introduces is a bottle of concentrated nicotine at snout height. A review of 321 cases of e-cigarette or e-liquid exposure in dogs reported between 2011 and 2024 describes what happens when a dog gets into that: vomiting, tremors, agitation, and cardiac rhythm changes, with the severity driven by the dose relative to body weight. Nicotine pouches are the same problem in a chewable, mint-scented package that smells like something worth eating.
A cigarette butt is unpleasant. A cartridge or a tin of pouches is a poisoning call. If you make the switch, treat the hardware the way you would treat a bottle of ibuprofen.
What to actually do, in order of how much it buys you
- Quit. It is the only step that removes the exposure rather than shrinking it, and it is the one Knapp’s team was hoping their results would push people toward, for the dog’s sake and for the sake of being around for the dog.
- If you cannot quit yet, move it fully outside, and add a buffer. Outdoors only, away from the door, and change or wash the top layer you smoked in before you sit down with the dog. That last step is the one everybody skips and it is the one the cotinine numbers argue for.
- Treat the house as contaminated, not just the air. Wash the dog bed, the throw blankets, and any washable slipcover. Vacuum with a HEPA filter. Residue in fabric keeps releasing long after the room stops smelling like anything.

The test almost nobody is offered
Bladder cancer in dogs, urothelial carcinoma, is a late-diagnosis disease. The early signs, blood in the urine, straining, frequent small urinations, accidents in a house-trained dog, are indistinguishable from an ordinary urinary tract infection. So the dog gets antibiotics, the signs partly improve, and months disappear.
There is a better move for high-risk dogs. Roughly 85 percent of canine urothelial carcinomas carry a single mutation in the BRAF gene, and that mutation can be picked up in DNA shed into a free-catch urine sample. The test is highly specific, which is what makes it usable as a screen rather than only a confirmation: in high-risk breeds, including Scottish Terriers, West Highland White Terriers, and Shetland Sheepdogs, it can flag an emerging tumor before the dog shows a single symptom.
“For a breed already carrying that much genetic risk, waiting until there is blood in the urine is waiting too long,” says Dr. Ravi Mehta. “A urine screen costs little, asks nothing of the dog, and can move the whole conversation months earlier. That is where the survival difference lives in this disease.”

When to call the vet, not wait
- Visible blood in the urine, at any point, at any age
- Straining, or repeated trips outside producing very little
- A urinary tract infection that does not fully resolve after one course of antibiotics
- A house-trained dog suddenly having accidents
None of these prove cancer. All of them are worth a same-week appointment rather than a wait-and-see.
What’s new since this was written
Two things have shifted since the Purdue results made the rounds.
The first is who is still smoking. Adult cigarette smoking in the United States has kept falling, and it is now down to roughly one in nine adults, less than half the share of twenty years ago. That is real progress, but the raw number is still in the tens of millions of people, and with dogs in the majority of American households, the overlap is enormous. The habit is rarer; the dogs in the room are not.
The second is that the alternatives grew up faster than the safety advice did. Vapes and nicotine pouches were niche when the Scottie dogs were being enrolled. They are now everywhere, and the poison-control caseload has followed, which is why the 321-case e-liquid review matters more today than it would have in 2019. If the plan is to swap rather than quit, the risk to your dog does not vanish. It changes shape, and it moves from the air into whatever is sitting on the coffee table.
The honest bottom line
Some of the dogs in that study got bladder cancer with almost no smoke exposure at all. Genetics do not negotiate, and no amount of clean air makes a dog cancer-proof.
But of everything on the list of risk factors, smoke is the one sitting entirely inside your control. That is a rare thing in oncology, and it is worth using.
