There is a piece of dog-training advice that keeps rising from the dead no matter how many times the science buries it. It goes like this: your dog is a pack animal, so your job is to become the pack leader, the alpha, and once your dog accepts that you are in charge, the good behavior follows. From that single idea flows a whole rulebook. Make the dog work before any affection. Never let the dog’s head get higher than yours. Eat before the dog eats. Never step around a sleeping dog, make it move. No sleeping in the bed, no cuddling on the couch. Each rule is supposed to remind the dog that you outrank it.
It is a tidy theory. It is also built on a misunderstanding of what dominance even is, and following it tends to produce exactly the kind of dog you did not want.
What dominance actually describes
Here is the part that gets lost. In animal behavior, dominance is not a personality trait and it is not a management philosophy. It is a narrow description of who gets a contested resource. If two dogs both want the chunk of steak that hit the floor, or the one good sunny spot, or the warm lap, and the same dog reliably wins that standoff, that dog is dominant in that relationship over that thing. That is the entire concept. It is about resolving competition over stuff.
Notice what is not on that list. Coming when called is not a dominance question. Sitting on cue is not a dominance question. Walking politely past another dog is not a dominance question. Those are learned skills, and lumping them under “who is the boss” confuses two completely different things: settling a resource dispute, and teaching an animal a behavior. Researchers are still working out how dominance even applies among dogs themselves, let alone across the species line between a human and a dog. What behaviorists broadly agree on is that trying to “win dominance” over your dog is, at best, beside the point, and at worst, damaging.
Obedience is education, not rank
Once you separate those two ideas, the alpha rules stop making sense. Your dog does not jump on visitors because it thinks it outranks you, and it will not stop because you ate your dinner first. It jumps because jumping has worked to get attention, and it will stop when you patiently teach a different behavior that works better. None of the things we ask of dogs come pre-installed. Sitting quietly for a guest, ignoring a squirrel, heeling on a loose leash, these are unnatural acts for a dog, and every one of them has to be taught, cue by cue, rep by rep. There is no master switch labeled “respect” that flips them all on at once.
“When a client tells me their dog is being dominant, I ask what the dog actually did,” says Dr. Lena Park. “Almost always it is a training gap wearing a scary costume. The dog was never staging a coup. It just never learned the thing we assumed it should already know, and the alpha framing sends people off fighting an enemy that was never there.”
Why the myth is so hard to kill
If the idea is this wrong, why does it stick around like a zombie? Part of the answer is that status is deeply real to us. Humans are exquisitely tuned to hierarchy, who gets the better table, the bigger office, the last word, so a status-based story about dogs feels intuitive and familiar. We import our own preoccupations onto the animal.
The other part is that the alpha model is seductively simple. It promises one-stop shopping: solve the single problem of who is in charge, and every other behavior problem supposedly resolves itself. That is a lovely fantasy. You already hold all the cards anyway, you open the doors, you control the food, you have the thumbs, so how hard could it be to convince the dog you are the boss. But real training does not collapse into one trick. It is the slow, specific work of connecting cues to behaviors, one at a time, and no amount of asserting rank shortcuts it.
The real cost of getting this wrong
This is not a harmless misunderstanding. When training becomes a contest to be won rather than a curriculum to be taught, the methods turn confrontational, and the results are ugly. At best you get a dog that complies because it is intimidated, performing out of anxiety rather than understanding. At worst, the escalating pressure tips into outright mistreatment. Decades of evidence point the other way: dogs trained with positive reinforcement show the best behavior, the fewest behavior problems, and the closest bonds with their people.
The alternative is not permissiveness. Being kind to your dog does not mean letting it behave like a rude houseguest. Dogs thrive on being consistent, clear, and fair, and they need real boundaries. But they respect us because we are reliable and predictable, and they trust us because we are patient and communicate in ways they can actually parse. That is a relationship, not a ranking.
What newer guidance adds
The professional consensus has only hardened against the dominance model, to the point where the leading veterinary behavior bodies now treat it as settled. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior has issued position statements explicitly warning against dominance-based and aversive training, recommending reward-based methods as both more effective and less risky for the dog’s welfare. Even the researcher whose wolf studies helped launch the popular “alpha wolf” idea has spent years trying to retract it, explaining that his early observations came from unrelated captive wolves and that wild wolf packs are simply families led by parents, not gladiators who fought their way to the top. The science that the myth was built on has been withdrawn by the very people who built it. The kinder approach was the correct one all along.
