Every so often the internet rediscovers toxoplasmosis and loses its mind. The parasite that supposedly makes mice befriend cats, the story goes, might be quietly rewiring you too, turning you into someone who cannot stop adoring their cat and swears the animal smells like clean laundry. It is a great story. It is mostly wrong. And the version that is true points in an almost comically ordinary direction: away from your cat and toward your kitchen.
Here is the frame worth holding onto before we get into specifics. Toxoplasma gondii is real, it is common, and cats are central to how it spreads through the world. But you, personally, are far more likely to pick it up from an undercooked pork chop than from the animal sleeping on your bed. Understanding the difference is the whole ballgame.
Why cats are at the center of this at all
Toxoplasma gondii is a single-celled parasite that can infect nearly any warm-blooded animal, including people. What makes cats special is biology, not blame: the parasite can only complete its full life cycle inside a cat. Every member of the cat family counts here, from a house cat to a bobcat to a tiger. That is why the parasite cannot persist in the world without them.
A cat picks it up the way a predator does, by eating something infected. In a city, that usually means a cat who catches and eats a mouse or bird, or who is fed raw or undercooked meat. In the wild, it runs between wild cats and their prey. Once a cat is newly infected, it sheds the parasite’s eggs in its stool for a short period, and then, in most cases, never again.
Dogs are not immune, by the way. They can be infected too. It is simply less common in dogs than in cats.
How likely is it that you already have it
More likely than you would guess, and less alarming than it sounds. Globally, estimates often land near one in three people carrying antibodies to the parasite, which means their body has met it at some point. Most of them never knew, because healthy people usually have no symptoms, or at most a brief, mild, flu-like stretch they would never connect to a parasite.
The United States sits lower than the global figure, and here is a piece the viral posts never mention: American infection rates have been falling for decades. National health survey data put seroprevalence around 22 percent in the late 1980s and early 1990s, then closer to 13 percent by 2009 to 2010. Better food handling and hygiene are the likely reasons. So the honest headline is not “one in three of you are infected.” For Americans it is closer to one in eight, and trending down.
Where you actually get it
This is the part that matters, so it gets its own spotlight. If you are infected, the odds are you did not get it from your pet.
The dominant route is food, specifically raw or undercooked meat, with pork and game meat among the usual suspects. The parasite forms cysts in muscle tissue, and cooking meat thoroughly destroys them. Washing your hands, your knives, and your cutting boards after they touch raw meat matters just as much. Gardening in soil that outdoor cats have used, and eating unwashed produce from it, is another real pathway.
“People fixate on the litter box and cook their pork to medium-rare,” says Dr. Priya Nair, a Pet Times veterinarian. “If you want to lower your toxoplasmosis risk in a way that actually moves the needle, use a meat thermometer and scrub the cutting board. Your cat is not the weak link. Your kitchen habits are.”
That does not mean the litter box is nothing. It means it is manageable, which brings us to the question everyone actually came here for.
The pregnancy question, handled correctly
Toxoplasmosis can be passed to a developing baby, which is why pregnant people are told to be careful, and that advice is sound. But careful does not have to mean terrified.
The key detail is timing. The eggs a cat sheds in the litter are not infectious the instant they land. They need roughly one to five days sitting in the box to mature into a form that can infect a person. Scoop daily and you are removing them before they can do anything, which pushes the practical risk toward zero.
Because the stakes are high, the safest recommendation still stands: if you are pregnant, hand off litter duty to someone else if you possibly can. If you cannot, do not rehome the cat over it. Wear gloves, scoop every single day, and wash your hands well afterward. That is a reasonable, low-drama way to protect yourself and your baby without upending your household.
The myths, sorted
Does infection make you love your cat more? No. There is no evidence for it. For the parasite to change human behavior at all, it would need to reach and affect a specific region of the brain, and the documented brain effects show up mainly in people who are immunocompromised, where symptoms are vague and clinical, things like headache, dizziness, altered awareness, or seizures. Your devotion to your cat is not a symptom. It is just you liking your cat.
Does it make your cat smell like fresh laundry to you? No confirmed science supports this one either. It is a charming TikTok, not a finding.
Does it make mice friendly toward cats? This one is true, and it is genuinely eerie. When the parasite settles into the parts of a rodent’s brain that handle fear and smell, the animal can lose its natural terror of cats and even seem drawn to them, which makes it easy prey and helps the parasite get back into a cat to complete its cycle. So the next time a viral clip shows a mouse cozying up to a cat, that is not friendship. It is very likely a parasite steering the wheel.
Can it change a person’s personality? Here the answer is a careful maybe. Some studies have looked for links between infection and shifts in mood or behavior, and a number have found associations with psychiatric conditions such as depression and schizophrenia. But this is an under-studied area, the effects are far from settled, and association is not the same as cause. It is a real research question, not a reason to panic.
What it means for your pet
Most cats and dogs who carry the parasite never show a thing, especially if their immune systems are healthy. When symptoms do appear, they can include:
- Fatigue
- Being less active or playful than usual
- Loss of appetite
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Labored or difficult breathing
- Neurological changes, like seizures or a wobbly, unsteady gait
None of those are unique to toxoplasmosis, which is exactly why they are worth taking seriously. A high fever, labored breathing, or sudden neurological changes warrant an emergency vet visit no matter the cause.
If you want to know your pet’s status, you can ask your vet to check a stool sample for the parasite during routine fecal screening, which is reasonable to do every six to twelve months. A pet who tests positive can usually be treated, often with an antibiotic, and outcomes are generally good when treatment starts promptly, though they depend on how severe the infection is and how healthy the animal was to begin with.
One more habit closes the loop on all of this: skip raw meat diets, or handle them with real care, because raw or undercooked meat can carry the parasite’s cysts and put both your pet and everyone handling their food at risk. Cook the meat, wash your hands, clean the surfaces. It is the same boring advice that protects you, and it works.
Toxoplasmosis deserves respect, not dread. Scoop daily, cook your meat, wash up, and let the cat be a cat.
