There is a bottle in most junk drawers that can send a dog to surgery, and its label says “non-toxic.” Gorilla Glue and similar polyurethane adhesives do not poison dogs in the usual sense. They do something stranger and, in its way, worse: on contact with the warm, wet, acidic environment of a stomach, the glue foams, expands to several times its volume, and hardens into a rock-like mass the dog cannot vomit up or pass. The result is a surgical emergency that began as a home repair.
Two details make this hazard unusually sneaky. Polyurethane glues can taste sweet to dogs, so an open bottle is not just an accident risk but an attractant. And ingestion of as little as two ounces, a few good licks of a spilled puddle, can obstruct the stomach of a 50-pound dog.
Why “non-toxic” doesn’t mean safe
The active troublemaker in these glues is a catalyzing agent called diphenylmethane diisocyanate, or MDI, found in Gorilla Glue, Elmer’s ProBond, and other polyurethane adhesives, though it is not always listed on the label. Regulatory classifications call the products non-toxic because the concern is not chemical poisoning of the bloodstream. The concern is physics.
When MDI-based glue meets water, it polymerizes: it foams, expands, and sets hard. A stomach supplies everything the reaction loves, moisture, warmth, and acidity, which actually accelerates the process. The expanding foam molds itself to the stomach’s interior and cures into a firm mass, and the reaction itself generates heat, which can add thermal burns to the esophagus and stomach lining on top of the obstruction. The mass can begin forming within minutes of ingestion.
The same reactivity is why the glue is hazardous beyond swallowing: inhaled fumes, eye contact, and skin contact all cause harm in people and pets, which is why the manufacturer’s own safety documentation runs long. But ingestion by a curious dog is the scenario that ends in an operating room.
The signs, and the trap of waiting
After a dog ingests expanding glue, warning signs can appear within 15 minutes or take as long as 20 hours: loss of appetite, restlessness, vomiting or unproductive retching, difficulty breathing, or the behavior changes that signal abdominal pain, hunching, guarding the belly, reluctance to move.
Here is the counterintuitive part that trips up well-meaning owners: do not induce vomiting. The hardened or hardening mass can injure or block the esophagus on the way up, turning a stomach problem into an airway crisis. If you saw the ingestion, suspect it, or find a chewed bottle, skip the home remedies and go to a veterinarian immediately, ideally with the product container in hand.
Mention the glue even if you are not sure. On an X-ray, a glue mass can look like “food bloat,” a stomach distended with overeaten food, and the resemblance has delayed correct diagnoses. Your history is the clue that points the radiograph in the right direction. Tell the vet what adhesives live in your house even if you do not think the dog could have reached them, because dogs are professionally underestimated.
What treatment involves
Once a mass has formed and is causing obstruction, surgery is the treatment, opening the stomach and removing the cast of cured foam, which often comes out as a startling replica of the stomach’s interior. Dogs treated promptly generally do well; delays raise the risks of ulceration, hemorrhage, laceration, or perforation of the stomach or esophagus, and in the worst cases, death. Prompt recognition genuinely changes the outcome, which is why the boring advice, call the vet now rather than watching overnight, is the whole game.
Prevention is a shelf, not a skill
Because polyurethane glue can read as a treat to a dog’s nose, storage is everything. Keep MDI-based adhesives sealed and in a closed cabinet or on a high shelf, never loose on a workbench at tail height. Clean spills immediately and completely, and throw away rags or cardboard soaked with wet glue in a covered bin. During projects, treat the glue bottle like you would a chocolate bar: never unattended in dog territory. The same rules protect toddlers, whose case reports read much like the dogs’.
What newer research adds
The problem has grown with the popularity of the products. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center has reported an increase of more than 300 percent in polyurethane glue ingestion cases since 2002, managing well over a hundred expanding-adhesive exposures in the years since 2005. Veterinary case series document what those numbers feel like in practice: masses swelling to four to eight times the glue’s original volume, and in one published series, eight of fourteen reported cases requiring surgical removal.
The pattern in the literature is consistent and useful: dogs whose owners connected the dots early, found the chewed bottle, mentioned the DIY project, went straight in, had shorter, simpler treatment. The bottle in your junk drawer is not going anywhere. The only variable worth controlling is how quickly you act if it ever ends up in the wrong mouth.
