For a generation of pet owners, the brown bottle of hydrogen peroxide was the emergency tool: dog eats something it shouldn’t, you make it vomit, crisis averted. That mental model is now out of date. Veterinary toxicology has spent the last few years quietly demoting home peroxide from first-aid staple to last resort, not because it stopped working, but because we now know it causes real stomach injury and because better, more predictable options have arrived. So the most useful thing to understand isn’t the dose. It’s why the whole approach has changed, and what to reach for (or call) instead. The single most important step hasn’t changed at all: the phone comes before the bottle.
Make the call first. Always.
When a dog eats something dangerous, the instinct is to do something immediately. Resist it for 60 seconds and call your veterinarian or an animal poison-control center first, because whether to induce vomiting at all depends entirely on what was swallowed and how much. Getting to a clinic is usually the better option anyway: vets can use medications with fewer side effects and monitor your dog the whole time. Home induction makes sense mainly when you’re genuinely too far from a clinic, or when a toxin acts fast enough that waiting is the bigger risk. That judgment call is exactly what poison control exists to make with you.

What’s replacing peroxide in the clinic
Here’s the part most owners haven’t heard. In veterinary practice, at-home peroxide has been superseded by cleaner tools. Vets have long used the injectable emetic apomorphine, which is more reliable and easier to monitor. More recently, the FDA approved ropinirole (brand name Clevor), an emetic that’s simply dropped into the dog’s eye. In its clinical trial, 86 percent of dogs vomited after a single dose and about 95 percent vomited within 30 minutes, with the number of drops scaled to the dog’s weight. These options are more predictable than peroxide and don’t leave the stomach inflamed afterward, which is why a clinic will almost always prefer them. Knowing they exist is a good reason to head for a vet rather than the cabinet whenever you reasonably can.
The one home job peroxide still does: inducing vomiting
When a vet or poison-control specialist does green-light home induction, 3 percent hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is the tool, and this is the one use where it still has a legitimate role. Before you pour, several factors change the answer, which is another reason to get guidance rather than wing it:
- What your dog ate. Some toxins act slowly, so racing to induce vomiting may be pointless. Others are dangerous coming back up: oily substances can be inhaled into the lungs during vomiting, and sharp objects can do more damage on the way up than they did going down.
- How much your dog ate. Some toxins only cause harm above a certain dose. A toxicologist can weigh the risk of the toxin against the risk of induced vomiting; sometimes watchful waiting wins.
- Your dog’s size. The dose is weight-based and has a hard ceiling even for giant dogs. Poison control can give you the right amount so you don’t create a new problem.
- Pre-existing conditions. Dogs with a history of gastritis or stomach ulcers are more prone to side effects. Mention any medical history.
- How old the bottle is. Peroxide degrades, and a years-old bottle may be useless. A fresh bottle is best, but don’t waste time on a store run; that time is better spent driving to the vet. You can spot-check a bottle by pouring some down the sink, if it foams and fizzes audibly, it’s probably still active.
- The concentration. Only the 3 percent solution is used. If you’ve done at-home hair dye, you may have a 6 percent bottle around, which is more likely to cause harm and should never be given by mouth.
If your dog doesn’t vomit, a single repeat dose after 10 minutes is sometimes advised, but confirm first. Never give more than two doses total; going beyond that sharply raises the odds of serious side effects.
Everything else people use it for: skip it
Over the decades, peroxide got recommended for all sorts of canine problems. In almost every case, there’s now a safer, more effective option:
Cleaning minor wounds. It bubbles and stings, so it feels like it’s working, but hydrogen peroxide actually slows wound healing by damaging the cells that repair skin, and it can drive bacteria deeper into the wound. Rinse minor scrapes with water or saline and call your vet.
Whitening tear stains. Peroxide bleaches tissue and hair, so it was used to lighten stains, but using it that close to the eyes is risky. Use wipes and products made specifically for tear staining.
Ear cleaning. It can break up ear gunk, but dogs hate the bubbling and may panic, and if an ear infection has already damaged the eardrum, peroxide reaching the middle ear can cause severe irritation and neurological signs. Use a vet-approved cleaner balanced for a dog’s ear pH.
Oral care. The old salt-baking-soda-peroxide tooth paste has been shown to be both ineffective and harmful; the salt risks salt toxicity and the peroxide is hard on the gums. Stick to a toothpaste accepted by the Veterinary Oral Health Council.
The one genuine bright spot: a mix of hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, and baking soda really does help neutralize skunk spray by breaking down the smelly compounds. Mix it fresh and use it immediately (never store it in a sealed container, since it off-gasses), keep it away from the eyes, and expect some bleaching of hair, towels, and clothing.
The side effects, spelled out
Even used correctly, peroxide has costs, which is the core of why it’s been demoted:
- Stomach upset. This is the whole mechanism, since peroxide induces vomiting by irritating the stomach lining, but that irritation lingers. Dogs given hydrogen peroxide have shown inflammation of the stomach lining more than a week after a single dose.
- Chemical burns and skin irritation. Concentrated formulas can damage intact skin, and even standard concentrations can cause whitening and local irritation.
- Delayed wound healing and infection. Despite its disinfectant reputation, it slows healing and damages the cells that repair skin and fight infection.
Can hydrogen peroxide kill a dog?
Drugstore peroxide is unlikely to be fatal unless a dog is significantly overdosed, but “unlikely” is not “never.” A dog given roughly 10 times the recommended emetic dose developed serious complications and needed several days of intensive care. That’s exactly why you give it only as directed and always talk to a vet first.
The cat rule that has no exceptions
Never give a cat hydrogen peroxide, full stop. Cats are far more prone to injury of the esophagus and stomach from peroxide and can develop severe ulcers and bleeding. There is no safe way to induce vomiting in a cat at home. If your cat has eaten something dangerous, that is strictly a job for the vet, and it’s urgent.
The bottom line
Hydrogen peroxide can still safely make a dog vomit after eating something toxic, but only at 3 percent, at the correct weight-based dose, and on a professional’s say-so, and even then the clinic likely has something better. For wounds, ears, eyes, and teeth, reach for purpose-made products instead. Keep a fresh bottle in the first-aid kit if you like, keep it away from cats entirely, and let a vet or poison control make the call before you ever use it.
