Almost everyone who lives with an animal has a version of the same story: a stretch of life that felt unmanageable, and a dog or a cat who somehow made it a little more survivable. During the loneliest months of the pandemic, plenty of people found that the steady, uncomplaining presence of a pet was the thing that got them from one day to the next. What’s easy to miss is that this isn’t just a sentimental feeling. There’s a measurable biology underneath it, and understanding that biology makes the comfort feel less like magic and more like something you can count on.
What your body does around an animal
Part of the effect is straightforwardly chemical. Interacting with animals has been shown to nudge up several of the body’s feel-better signals, including endorphins, oxytocin, prolactin, and dopamine, the same chemistry involved in regulating blood pressure, dampening pain, easing stress, and generating plain old joy. That’s the physiological reason a rough day can genuinely soften the moment a dog meets you at the door in a state of uncomplicated delight.
There’s also a psychological layer. One leading explanation draws on attachment theory: the bond we form with an animal offers companionship and, crucially, social support with no judgment attached. A pet doesn’t need you to explain yourself, doesn’t weigh in on your choices, and doesn’t require you to perform being okay. That non-judgmental acceptance is exactly what tends to lower stress and lift mood, and it’s why therapy-animal visits work the way they do. People’s whole demeanor can shift within minutes of meeting a friendly, accepting animal, which is the entire premise behind organizations that bring pets into schools, hospitals, and nursing homes.
“What makes an animal so regulating isn’t that they cheer you up, it’s that they ask nothing of you,” says Dr. Mara Chen. “A pet meets you exactly where you are, and that unconditional, low-demand contact quiets the nervous system in a way even well-meaning people sometimes can’t. I tell clients it’s a real support, just not a substitute for treatment.”
The numbers are more specific than you’d think
When researchers zoom in on particular groups, the effects get concrete. In work on veterans living with PTSD, having a trained service dog has been associated with roughly 30 percent lower depression, about 21 percent greater ability to take part in social activities, and an overall drop in the stress hormone cortisol. For people with physical disabilities, a trained service dog has been linked to around 10 percent better emotional functioning and 16 percent better functioning at work or school. And in classroom-based, animal-assisted programs for children with autism, researchers have documented a 54 percent increase in social behaviors, an area many autistic kids find challenging, alongside a 43 percent reduction in physiological signs of anxious arousal.
Those are not soft numbers. They’re the kind of measurable change that gets animal-assisted approaches taken seriously as a complement to traditional care.
It’s not just dogs
Dogs and horses get the lion’s share of research attention, but they’re far from the only animals capable of offering real emotional support. People find genuine steadiness in cats, whose quiet company has helped many owners move through grief, anxiety, and depression, sometimes as an unexpected gift after inheriting a pet from a loved one who has died. And the category is wider than most people assume: certain therapy programs will certify as many as nine kinds of animal for emotional-support work, dogs and cats, naturally, but also rats, horses, llamas and alpacas, birds, potbellied pigs, guinea pigs, and rabbits. What ties that list together is that each of these animals gives off stress signals a handler can actually read, so a person can tell when the animal itself needs a breather.
What newer research adds
Here’s the honest update, because the science has gotten more nuanced, not less. A run of recent studies makes clear that “pets improve mental health” is true for many people but not a universal law. Across more than 100 studies over the past four decades, results have been genuinely mixed, and a few careful 2024 and 2025 papers complicate the cheerful headline.
A large 2025 study followed about 600 older adults in Baltimore and found something counterintuitive: owners who were the most intensely bonded to their pets actually reported steeper declines in well-being over time than owners with a looser attachment, possibly because deep attachment also means more worry and more grief. Other work has found dog owners tend to see bigger drops in stress and loneliness than cat owners or non-owners, and a 2025 analysis pointed to loneliness as a key middle step, pets seem to help partly by easing that specific feeling. The takeaway isn’t that pets don’t help. It’s that the benefit depends on you, your circumstances, and your relationship with the animal, and that a pet is a wonderful support alongside real care, not a replacement for it.
