I Doubted a $30 Plastic Box Could Beat Litter Smell. It Did.
The Petkit Pura Air is a battery-powered puck that fires a puff of scent every time your cat walks by. It has no business working as well as it does for the price.

Litter-box odor is the tax you pay for living with a cat, and it is a steep one. So when a small rectangle called the Petkit Pura Air turned up promising to fix it, my first reaction was skepticism. This little battery-powered thing, against the full force of a used litter box? I did not have high hopes. I was wrong, and pleasantly so, because for roughly $30 it does a genuinely impressive amount of work.
What it actually is
Think of it as a smarter, better-looking cousin of a plug-in air freshener. Where a plug-in just hums along, this one is motion-triggered: a sensor wakes it the moment your cat strolls by, and it pushes air through a scented filter. Unlike a cheap freshener, though, it is not just masking with perfume. Inside there is a replaceable filter, an ionizer, and small built-in fans that move air and work on the smell rather than simply piling fragrance on top of it.
The scent it puts out is the part I expected to hate, and I didn’t. It is not the cloying, headache-inducing wall of fake floral you get from a lot of odor products. It reads more like a light upgrade to the air near the box than a cover-up.
Living with it
Installation is genuinely easy. It sticks to a wall (or basically any flat surface) with the included 3M strips, and if you would rather mount it permanently, there are holes for screws. The back plate stays put while the main unit slides on and off, which you will do periodically to swap batteries and filters. Plan on fresh batteries roughly every three months and a new filter every four to six.
The design deserves a nod. It is a clean, understated rectangle with a small logo and a few vents, plus status lights on top that blink when the battery or filter needs attention. It is that quiet, minimalist look that disappears into a room, though I will say its neutral tones and hard lines can feel a little out of place in a space full of color and clutter.
The one thing I’d want clearer
My real reservation is not performance, it is transparency. Petkit describes the filter as a non-toxic, plant-derived air freshener drawing on extracts from a couple dozen plants that break down odor molecules. That is reassuring as far as it goes, but it stops short of a full ingredient list, and that matters more for cats than for most pets. Some essential oils are genuinely risky for cats, so with anything that releases scent into the air your cat breathes all day, I would love to see the exact contents spelled out. If your cat has respiratory issues or a history of sensitivity, that is worth weighing.
The verdict
For its size and price, the Pura Air overdelivers. It will not turn a neglected box into a rose garden, nothing will, and it is not a substitute for actually scooping. But as a low-effort, low-cost way to keep the air around the litter station from announcing itself, it earned its spot on my wall.
What’s new since this review
Petkit has kept expanding its odor lineup since, including refill filters and scent cartridges built specifically for its automatic litter boxes, so if you already own one of those you may find a version designed to pair with it. Pricing on the standalone Pura Air still tends to land in the same budget-friendly, roughly $30 range, and it remains widely available. The core takeaway holds: this is one of the least expensive pieces of “smart” pet gear that actually justifies the label.
