Here is a small piece of veterinary honesty: there is no urgent reason to check a healthy dog’s heart rate on a random Tuesday. The reason to learn this skill now is that the moment you actually need it, your dog sluggish and worrying you at 9 p.m., is the worst possible moment to be fumbling through your first attempt. Learn the skill while it is boring. Then, when it matters, you will have two things the emergency vet will thank you for: a number, and a baseline to compare it against.
The baseline is the part almost everyone skips, and it is the part that makes the number mean anything at all.
The textbook range is almost uselessly wide
Most awake, calm, healthy adult dogs land somewhere between 70 and 100 beats per minute. But the edges of normal are far apart. A dog ripping around the park can legitimately hit 250 bpm. A dog in deep sleep can idle at 30, one beat every two seconds. In one study that tracked 60 healthy dogs, the overall average was 73 bpm, but individual dogs’ averages ranged from 53 all the way to 110.
Puppies run their own program entirely: around 200 bpm in the first week of life, gliding down to roughly 110 by nine weeks as their cardiovascular system matures. A racing puppy heart that would alarm you in an adult is just Tuesday for a seven-week-old.
What actually moves the needle, in both directions: breed, age, fitness, excitement, anxiety, pain, hydration, body temperature, medications, and disease. Which is exactly why a single reading without context is nearly meaningless, and why the same number can be reassuring in one dog and alarming in another.
“I care much less about whether a dog’s number matches a chart than whether it matches that dog. An owner who can tell me the resting rate was 80 all spring and it’s 130 this week has handed me a diagnostic gift,” says Dr. Amara Solis.
Heart rate versus pulse rate, briefly
You will see home guides talk about the pulse rate rather than the heart rate, and for practical purposes they are the same number. The pulse is the pressure wave that each heartbeat sends down an artery. The wave tracks the beat exactly, unless an arrhythmia stacks beats so close together that the heart has no time to refill between them, in which case some beats produce no pulse at all. Think of a soap dispenser pumped too fast: press before it refills and you get a sputter instead of a full pump. A pulse can never outrun the heart, but it can fall behind it, and a big mismatch is worth a vet visit.
One rhythm quirk you should not panic about: relaxed dogs often have a sinus arrhythmia, a gentle speeding up as they inhale and slowing as they exhale. It is subtle, normal, and if anything a sign of a chilled-out nervous system.
The technique, and where people go wrong
The full step-by-step lives in the how-to above, but three details separate a useful reading from a random number.
First, location. The femoral artery on the inner thigh is the spot, and most first-timers feel around too low on the leg. You want the upper thigh, close to the body, fingertips on the inside surface, pressing lightly. Press too hard and you flatten the artery and feel nothing.
Second, conditions. Measure calm or the measurement is noise. A dog who is panting, trembling, or mid-greeting will read high for reasons that have nothing to do with health. If you have a stethoscope and ambitions, the heart itself is loudest low on the left side of the chest, roughly where the elbow touches when you flex the shoulder back, though panting and barrel-chested anatomy can make this harder than it sounds.
Third, repetition. One reading is a data point. Five readings across a few relaxed evenings is a baseline. Write them down. The whole payoff of this skill is comparison over time, and memory is a terrible chart.
Reading the number like a clinician
Context first, always. A rate of 170 after a sprint around the yard is expected. The same 170 in a dog who has been asleep on the couch for an hour is a finding. Small dogs tend to read higher than big dogs in the exam room, though interestingly, research has struggled to confirm any tidy size-to-rate rule; the 60-dog study found no correlation between body weight and heart rate. Individual variation swamps the folklore.
The thresholds worth acting on: a sustained rate above 160 in a visibly calm adult dog, or below 40 in a dog who is awake and moving around, earns a call to your vet. Weakness, collapse, pale gums, or labored breathing alongside any unusual rate earns an immediate trip, not a phone call.
And the flip side deserves equal billing: a normal heart rate does not clear your dog. Dogs in genuine medical crises sometimes present with perfectly ordinary rates, because the systems controlling heart rate are complex and compensatory. The number is one instrument on the dashboard. If your dog seems wrong, believe the dog, not the dashboard.
What newer research adds
The baseline idea is quietly going automated. Smart collars now track resting heart rate, respiratory rate, and heart-rate variability around the clock, and the validation science is maturing: a 2024 study in the Journal of Veterinary Cardiology compared a smart collar’s 24-hour heart-rate readings against Holter monitoring, the clinical gold standard, in healthy dogs, and earlier work found collar-based monitoring could distinguish osteoarthritic dogs from healthy ones by their physiological patterns.
For an owner, the practical version is simple: if your dog already wears a tracking collar that logs resting heart rate, glance at the trend line monthly. A drifting resting rate in a dog who seems fine is exactly the kind of early whisper this article is about. Just do not let the gadget replace the skill. Collars fall off, batteries die, and the femoral artery ships with the dog.
