Distemper is one of veterinary medicine’s quiet success stories, and that is exactly why it is dangerous again. Before a reliable vaccine, canine distemper virus was one of the leading killers of dogs in America. Widespread vaccination pushed it so far to the margins that many owners today have never met a dog who had it. Familiarity bred forgetting, forgetting bred lapsed boosters, and the virus never actually left. It has been circulating this whole time in raccoons, foxes, coyotes, and skunks, waiting for unvaccinated dogs to find it.
And lately, dogs are finding it. Through 2025 and into 2026, wildlife and animal-services agencies across the country reported spikes in canine distemper, mostly in raccoons: Colorado Parks and Wildlife flagged infected raccoons in the San Luis Valley, Florida saw outbreaks across multiple counties, animal services in Fayetteville, Arkansas issued a public alert about a raccoon-population spike, and northeastern Oklahoma reported a rise in symptomatic raccoons. When distemper is circulating in the wildlife around you, an unvaccinated dog does not need a dog park to catch it. A backyard raccoon encounter will do.
The short version: distemper is highly contagious, attacks multiple body systems at once, has no cure, and can kill or permanently disable a dog. It is also almost entirely preventable with a vaccine most dogs already get. This article covers how to recognize it early, what treatment can and cannot do, and the vaccination facts that matter — including one that a lot of owners, and a few clinics, still have wrong.
What canine distemper is
Canine distemper is a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease affecting dogs, puppies, and many species of wildlife. Caused by the canine distemper virus (CDV), it targets the immune system and can affect multiple body systems at once — respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous — with a mortality rate reported as high as 80 percent. Even dogs who survive can be left with lasting damage, which is part of what makes CDV one of the most dangerous pathogens a dog can encounter.
That multi-system attack is what makes distemper so hard to recognize. Because it can hit the lungs, the gut, and the brain in the same dog, its signs sprawl across categories that owners rarely connect, which is where early cases slip through.
Which dogs are most at risk
All dogs can be infected, but staying current on vaccinations has drastically reduced the odds for vaccinated adults. That leaves the vulnerable groups clearly defined: unvaccinated adults, and puppies — especially those younger than four months. Puppies are particularly susceptible because their immune systems are still developing and not yet at full capacity. Even after a shot or two, a puppy is not fully protected until the series is complete. Dogs adopted from crowded or under-resourced settings, such as some shelters, pet stores, or hoarding situations, are also higher risk, because that is exactly where unvaccinated animals congregate.
The signs, grouped the way the virus actually works
The reason distemper fools people is that its early signs look like an ordinary cold, and by the time the alarming signs appear, the disease is advanced. It helps to think in two stages.
Stage one — looks like a bad cold or stomach bug. The virus typically starts mild, and these signs are easily mistaken for something minor:
- Coughing and sneezing
- Thick discharge from the eyes and nose
- Fever
- Lethargy
- Rapid-onset vomiting or diarrhea
Stage two — the nervous system gets involved. If the disease progresses, the signs turn distinctive and much more serious:
- Seizures
- Circling or head tilt
- Muscle twitching, often rhythmic (“chewing gum” jaw movements and drooling)
- Nystagmus (rapid, uncontrolled eye movement)
- Partial or full paralysis
Two physical clues can accompany either stage and are fairly specific to distemper: thickened, hardened foot pads and nose skin (the old nickname “hard pad disease” comes from this), and, in young puppies, permanent damage to the developing adult teeth.
The catch is timing. A dog can be infected and shedding virus for up to three weeks before showing any illness. That is why any unvaccinated dog with respiratory signs plus gut signs, or anything neurological, should be treated as urgent, not waited out.
“Distemper is a master of disguise early on, because those first signs look like an ordinary cold,” says Dr. Ravi Mehta, a Pet Times veterinary advisor. “The mistake I worry about is families waiting it out at home. If a dog is unvaccinated or under-vaccinated and you’re seeing respiratory signs stacked on top of vomiting, diarrhea, or anything neurological, don’t watch it overnight. That combination is your signal to call.”
How it spreads
The virus travels through the air, which makes it highly contagious when a dog comes into close contact with an infected animal. Coughing, sneezing, or even barking can pass it from one dog to the next, especially when animals are crowded — so boarding, grooming, and dog parks all raise exposure. It spreads much like kennel cough.
Because wildlife carries distemper, even a homebody dog who rarely meets another dog can be infected through a raccoon, fox, coyote, or skunk in the yard. The virus can also travel on shared objects such as food and water bowls, where infected secretions pass to the next animal. The one piece of good news: CDV is not hardy outside the body and does not persist long in the environment, so cleanup is straightforward (more on that below).
How it’s diagnosed
Because most distemper signs overlap with other illnesses, diagnosis can be confusing at first. Veterinarians may run bloodwork or imaging to rule out other diseases, or go straight for a distemper PCR test, which looks for the virus’s genetic material in a dog’s blood, urine, or a swab. A blood antibody (titer) test can show whether a dog has antibodies, but it cannot tell a naturally exposed dog from a vaccinated one, so it is used more to assess immunity than to diagnose an active infection.
Treatment and recovery: supportive care is all we have
There is currently no cure for distemper, and that fact drives everything about treatment. Care is entirely supportive — keeping the dog alive and stable while their own immune system fights the virus. Several factors shape the odds and speed of recovery: age, vaccination status, overall health, and how fast the immune system responds.
Supportive treatment may include:
- Intravenous fluids and nutrients to combat dehydration and malnutrition
- Antibiotics to prevent secondary bacterial infections (which the antibiotics fight, not the virus itself)
- Medications to relieve vomiting and diarrhea
- Anticonvulsants or sedatives to control seizures
- Analgesics to relieve pain
- Steroids, if cerebral edema (swelling around the brain) is suspected
Even dogs who survive the acute infection can be left with varying degrees of permanent neurological damage, along with compromised tooth enamel and hardened nose and foot pads. Some neurological symptoms can be managed with medication, depending on their severity and the dog’s quality of life.
Recovery is not the end of the contagion risk. After clinical recovery, a dog may continue shedding the virus for several months, so they should be kept away from unvaccinated puppies and places where dogs gather until follow-up testing tells your vet it is safe.
Prevention: the vaccine facts owners get wrong
Here is where the most common misunderstanding lives, and it is worth stating plainly because it appears in a lot of older articles: distemper is a three-year vaccine, not a yearly one.
Distemper is a core vaccine — recommended for essentially every dog — and it is given first as a puppy series, then a booster about a year later. After that, current American Animal Hospital Association guidelines call for revaccination no more often than every three years, using the modified-live vaccine. This is not corner-cutting. Distemper immunity is genuinely durable: studies have detected protective antibodies for many years after vaccination, in some experimental conditions nearly a decade out. If your clinic still schedules distemper as an annual shot, it is reasonable to ask whether they are following the three-year interval.
The puppy schedule, by contrast, is not something to stretch. The distemper vaccine (in the combination shot, often labeled DHPP or DHLPP) should start at six to eight weeks of age, repeat every three to four weeks until the puppy is at least 16 weeks old, and then get the one-year booster. Until that series is finished, keep puppies away from places where dogs congregate and away from unvaccinated or potentially sick dogs.
Two more habits round out prevention:
- Keep dogs away from wildlife. With raccoons and other carriers driving current outbreaks, this is not abstract advice. Secure trash, don’t leave pet food outside, and don’t let a dog investigate a raccoon that is behaving oddly.
- Clean simply but thoroughly. Because CDV is fragile outside the body, dilute bleach and most household disinfectants kill it on hard surfaces. Sanitize exposed bedding, toys, and food and water bowls.
If an outbreak is active in your area, many communities run low-cost vaccine clinics — a cheap insurance policy against a disease with no cure.
The bottom line
Canine distemper is a serious, potentially fatal disease that hits puppies and unvaccinated dogs hardest, produces wildly varied symptoms because it attacks several body systems at once, and has no cure — only supportive care. Vaccination has driven it to the margins, but the virus is very much alive in wildlife, and 2025–2026 outbreaks are a reminder of what happens when protection lapses. Keeping your dog current on the core vaccine — starting the puppy series on time and honoring the three-year adult schedule — is the single most effective thing you can do.
