Ticks are unpleasant, but they are not, on their own, the main threat to most dogs. The bigger danger is what pet parents believe about them. A confident false assumption is what leads someone to skip the after-walk check, to relax in winter, or to reach for a lit match, and any one of those is how a preventable tick-borne illness gets its foot in the door.
So consider this a myth-clearing. Here are seven things a lot of dog people get wrong about ticks, and what is actually true.
Myth 1: “My dog is on prevention, so ticks aren’t my problem”
This is the most comfortable myth and the most dangerous, because it talks you out of looking. Flea-and-tick preventives are genuinely important and every dog in tick country should be on one. But no product is an invisible shield. Ticks can still climb aboard and even attach before the medication kills them. The preventive lowers your risk enormously; it does not zero it out. The hands-on check after every walk is not redundant with the medicine, it is the safety net underneath it.
Myth 2: “We don’t hike in the woods, so we’re safe”
Ticks are not a wilderness-only problem. They live on the ground across all kinds of terrain, including manicured urban parks and suburban backyards. Their strategy is to climb a blade of grass and wait, questing, until a warm body brushes past, then hitch a ride. And because they tend to migrate upward once aboard, they are frequently found around a dog’s head and ears. A stroll through a city green is not the immunity people imagine it to be.
Myth 3: “Ticks drop out of the trees onto my dog”
A common image, and false. Ticks do not lurk in tree canopies waiting to parachute down. They wait low, on grass, leaf litter, and brush usually within a few feet of the ground, and grab on as an animal passes. The reason people find them up high on a dog, near the neck and head, is not that they fell from above, it is that they climbed up from below. It matters because it tells you where the risk actually is: the underbrush at your dog’s level, not the sky.
Myth 4: “It’s only a summer thing”
Tick season peaks in the warm months, roughly April through November across much of the U.S., but “peak” is not “only.” Infection can occur any time of year. In winter, some tick species simply move indoors, while others produce a kind of internal antifreeze that lets them survive the cold outright. That year-round persistence is exactly why veterinarians increasingly recommend keeping dogs on prevention through every season, not just the summer stretch.
Myth 5: “Lyme is the only disease worth worrying about”
Lyme gets the headlines, and it is the most widely recognized tick-borne illness, but it is far from the only one. Ticks can also transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever, babesiosis, and ehrlichiosis, and these can hit a dog just as hard. Knowing that changes how you watch your dog after a bite; the warning signs are not limited to the classic Lyme picture.
Myth 6: “A hot match or some petroleum jelly makes the tick back out”
None of the folk removal tricks work the way people hope, and several actively backfire. Heat, a lit match, petroleum jelly, and alcohol dabbed on an embedded tick do not make it politely withdraw. What they can do is provoke the tick into pumping extra saliva, and whatever pathogens ride along with it, into the bite, which raises the infection risk. The correct method is mechanical: grasp the tick with tweezers as close to your dog’s skin as possible and pull it out with a steady, even motion. Then dispose of it down the toilet or in rubbing alcohol and clean the site with mild soap and water. A small red spot or bull’s-eye of redness at the bite can be normal for a day or two; see your vet if it grows or has not faded within two to three days.
Myth 7: “Found a tick? One blood test will tell me everything”
If your dog is sick and you know they were exposed to ticks, a tick-borne disease screen is absolutely worth running. But do not expect a single test to deliver a clean verdict. These tests are frequently negative on the first sample and may need to be repeated two to three weeks later to confirm an infection, so an early negative does not mean your dog is disease-free. Complicating things further, many dogs carrying a tick-borne illness show no symptoms at all in the early stages. One more field note from the exam room: before you panic over a “tick,” confirm that’s actually what it is. Clinics field a surprising number of frantic visits that turn out to be a nervously yanked nipple.
“The dogs I worry about aren’t the ones whose owners find a tick, they’re the ones whose owners were sure they’d never have one,” says Dr. Ravi Mehta. “Treat every walk through grass as a possible exposure, check your dog afterward, and stay on prevention all year. The myths are what cost you the early window, and with these infections, the early window is everything.”
What’s new since this was written
The “we don’t have ticks here” myth is aging worse every year, because the map keeps changing. The Asian longhorned tick, first found in the U.S. in 2017, has now been reported across roughly 20 states, and because its females can reproduce without a mate, a single tick can establish a whole population in a new yard. Researchers have also documented longhorned ticks carrying the bacterium behind ehrlichiosis for the first time, and confirmed a newly identified pathogen in dogs, provisionally named Rickettsia finnyi, in the Southeast and Midwest, with signs resembling Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
The practical upshot for a dog owner: geography is a weaker excuse than ever. Ticks, and the diseases they carry, are reaching places they were not a decade ago.
